How I made it over, my soul looks back and wonder how I made it over. Betty Lakey
Johnson Leary, the oldest child of eight to the late Willie L. Lakey, Sr. and Willie Mae
My sunrise was March 15, 1938 in Simsboro, LA and sunset was February 28,
2021 at Leslie Lakes Retirement Center in Arcadia, LA.
I received Christ at an early age and spent the last years of my life unto my health wouldn’t
allow me to continue going forth in love, testifying of the Good News, the Gospel, and giving
my Father All Praises and Glory.
I became the mother of my wonderful son, Rickey Ricardo Johnson, December 31, 1958. My
father, mother, son and brother Foster Lakey they preceded me in death.
My educational years was at Fellowship Elementary, in Simsboro, LA and I attended Grambling
High School in Grambling, LA. I received further education in the field of Nursing working in
hospitals for several years while living in Los Angeles, CA and in Detroit, MI. I advanced my
Nursing career and became a private Duty Homecare Nurse while living in Oakland, CA. I
changed my career path and became a licensed Cosmetologist. I moved to Detroit, MI in
December 1988 and opened my own Beauty Shop, called “Betty C”.
I had many hobbies that I loved and enjoyed doing. One of the most that I enjoyed and wanted
to be a master at was playing the piano. I owned some of the top of the line brand pianos. I
played in many recitals.
Well family, friends, and to this world, I have fought a good fight, finished my course and my
Father has said “Well Done”. I am wearing my Crown, I have put on my Robe, telling my Story,
how I made it, I made it. I am with my Father in my Heavenly Home and Eternal Life. This is
not the end, just another beginning.
There are so many wonderful memories that we share, hold onto them, we shall be together
again, my grandson, Donte Johnson, three great grand-daughters, Khole Johnson, Kayslynn
Johnson of Dallas, TX, Nataliya Johnson of Bakersfield, CA; stepmother, Hattie Lakey of
Jonesboro, LA,; one aunt, Minnie W. Simmons of Los Angeles, CA; two sisters: Evangelist
